Top 10 finish first time out!

Volkswagen Racing Cup - Rounds 1 and 2

23rd April 2019

Jeff’s debut in the 2019 Volkswagen Racing Cup at Monday’s (22nd April) Oulton Park meeting culminated in an impressive eighth place finish in race two. Whilst race one started well and another top-ten position looked to be on the cards, a technical issue on the last lap signaled a premature exit to the season’s opening round.

Having formed an association with Maximum Motorsport at the beginning of April to run the Matrix Motorsport Golf Mk5, Jeff was pleased to qualify P12 after only one day of testing on the lead up to this weekend.

Even following a relatively cautious start in race one, he made it though to ninth place before an issue with the fuel pump brought car to a halt on the final lap. Although frustrating, it was the first time out and when things were going well, Jeff was happy with the pace of the car. Therefore, with the Golf back to 100%, things looked promising for race two.

An uncharacteristic slow start was cancelled out when an incident involving Jeff’s Maximum Motorsport teammate Bret Smith brought out the red flag and consequently, the race was re-started.  A far better getaway at the re-start saw the Matrix car move up to three places by the time it exited the first corner - and then another place before the end of the first lap.

A second incident later in the race resulted in the appearance of the Safety Car, following which it was sprint to the line for the last few laps, during which Jeff made up more places to finish a credible eighth.

“I really enjoyed both races and whilst it was a shame not to finish the first, it was great to claim a top-ten place in the second. I still have a lot to learn about the Golf, but with Malcolm Smith helping behind the scenes, I was able to make good progress throughout the day.

“I have to say that I found my first Volkswagen Racing Cup experience a very friendly affair. I’m therefore looking forward to the next meeting already!”

Due to other commitments, Jeff will miss Snetterton and therefore, his next outing will be at Silverstone on 8th & 9th June.

Jeff’s 2019 campaign is supported by Matrix Motorsport, Old Cottage Beer Company, DE Data, Inspired Business Media, ACCL, HVAC FM and RPM Promotions.
