Matrix Motorsport heads north as season reaches halfway point
Press Information - 22nd June 2018
Renault UK Clio Cup Rounds 9 & 10 - Team Race Preview
This weekend's (23rd & 24th June) rounds nine and ten of the 2018 Renault UK Clio Cup at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire - the championship's most northern venue in its nine-meeting, 18-race calendar - marks the season's halfway point. The event will see the four-car Matrix Motorsport team and its drivers Mike Epps, Andy Wilmot, Aaron Thompson and team principal Jeff Alden back on track just two weeks after rounds seven and eight.
Due to the ultra-close racing and sometimes bruising outcomes during the previous two races at Oulton Park, the Matrix team has been working hard at its Burton-on-Trent workshops in order to get its cars back to their usual well-presented high standard. They will return to battle this weekend on a circuit that, because of its high speed straights and variation of corners, makes it a favourite with many of the UK's top saloon car drivers.
The nature of the circuit means that it's another first for the Matrix Motorsport team that aims to make the most of the two pre-weekend 45-minute practice sessions in order to gather data, build on its experience of the season so far and set up its quartet of cars accordingly. Consequently, hopes are high within the camp that a podium position can finally be realised this weekend.
Mike Epps - Driver #37
"Croft is one of those circuits where you love some of it - but not all of it. Bearing in mind this weekend marks the championship's half way point, it would be a great time to get a top-three result and in reality, we're not that far away. If we can nail qualifying, we've shown that the pace is there, so it's all about applying it in the right place at the right time."
Aaron Thompson - Driver #41
"It was a memorable weekend for all the wrong reasons at Oulton Park, so I am putting all that behind me and refocusing on what needs to be done to get closer to the front of the field. I know I can do it, it's just having all the planets aligned at once and this weekend at Croft is a great opportunity for me to do that."
Andy Wilmot - Driver #21
"Oulton for me was a learning curve. Unfortunately, I got involved with someone else's accident in race two, but getting going again and making the most of the track time was important. I love Croft, it's like a big kart circuit. I'm therefore hoping to break in to the top 10 this weekend. It's not easy this year because of the quality of the field, but nevertheless I intend to push as hard as I can throughout the two races."
Jeff Alden - Driver #19 and Team Principal
"I can't believe that we're halfway through the season already! For us as a team, Croft provides another first and therefore, another opportunity. The championship is so close, that it will not take much to see all four of us further up the field. I'm confident that we can continue to build on the continual progress we've made this season and challenge for a podium finish this weekend."
Croft's Renault UK Clio Cup action starts on Friday with two 45-minute practice sessions. The competition gets underway with 30-minutes of Qualifying at 11.20 on Saturday, followed by the first of the weekend's two, 12-lap races at 16.00. The second race takes place on Sunday at 13.55 and will be broadcast live on ITV4.
