Another first for Matrix Motorsport as team heads to Oulton Park

Press Information - 6th June 2018

Renault UK Clio Cup Rounds 7 & 8 - Team Preview

Next up on the calendar for Matrix Motorsport are rounds seven and eight of the Renault UK Clio Cup, which take place at Oulton Park this Saturday and Sunday, 9th and 10th June. For the Burton-on-Trent based operation, this weekend’s two, 12-lap races represent another first, as it has never visited the Cheshire circuit as a team before.

Nevertheless, all four of the Matrix drivers: Mike Epps from Hemel Hempstead (#37), Aaron Thompson (#41) from Romford, Andy Wilmot from Rochester (#21) and team principal Jeff Alden (#19) from Cheltenham, have experience of the 2.26 miles of asphalt that makes up the Island (middle-distance) configuration of the track.

Each driver has said they are looking forward to the circuit’s twisty and undulating nature that contrasts sharply with the fast and flat character of Thruxton, which hosted the previous two rounds. Since the championship’s visit to Hampshire in May, the team has been hard at work behind the scenes and hopes are high in the Matrix camp that performance and consequently results will, as they have done so far this season, continue to move forward.

TEAM QUOTES

Mike Epps - Driver
“This weekend I need a good points haul to catch up with the championship leaders. I think we’re getting closer with the setup window every time, so fingers crossed.

“I’ve raced at Oulton Park before in Formula Vee, VW Cup and BTCC. In fact, I was in the top 10 for almost all six BTCC races I entered there, so I really like the place. For me, the track is a mixture of Donington and Brands Hatch. Because of their tarmac and character, I believe that Thruxton, Croft and Rockingham are the tough circuits for us this season, so I think we can do well at Oulton.

Aaron Thompson - Driver
“For me, Oulton Park is one of the best tracks in the country. I’ve only been there once before, which was for last year’s Clio Cup when I qualified fourth. So the aim is top-ten at least this weekend.

“In this championship you never really know how competitive you’re going to be until the clock goes on, but I’ve been working on my personal fitness this past couple of weeks so I feel better prepared than ever and I’m going to give it 100%.”

Andy Wilmot - Driver and Team Director
"Although I’ve raced at Oulton Park before, I have limed experience of the circuit, as the championships I have been with in the past didn’t visit it. However, what I have done there I’ve enjoyed. I’m very positive about this weekend and intend to take onboard the advice of my team mates, who have all had more experience of the circuit.”

Jeff Alden - Driver and Team Principal
“Having competed at Oulton Park before in other championships, I know the track quite well, but it’s a different scenario when you’re in different car and racing in a championship that’s as competitive as the Clio Cup. This whole season is a learning curve for me, but I’m thoroughly enjoying it and looking to forward to this weekend, as Oulton is such an exciting track to drive.”

Dave Hayes - Team Manager and Chief Engineer
“It will be interesting to see how our cars perform, as I believe Oulton Park is much more suited to us. It will be important to establish a good set-up in Friday’s two practice sessions and then convert this into a good qualifying performance. We can then start the two races further up the field, which is vitally important in a closely fought one-make series.”

The Renault UK Clio Cup action at Oulton Park begins on Friday with two 45-minute practice sessions. The competition kicks off with 30-minutes of Qualifying at 11.00 on Saturday, followed by the first of the weekend’s two races at 16.00. The second takes place on Sunday at 13.30 and will be broadcast live on ITV4.
