Matrix Motorsport fast tracks to Thruxton
Press Information - 16th May 2018
Renault UK Clio Cup Rounds 5 & 6 - Team Preview
Since rounds four and five of the 2018 Renault UK Clio Cup at Donington at the end of April, the Matrix Motorsport team has been working hard behind the scenes to ensure it hits the ground running when it gets to Thruxton this coming weekend, 19th & 20th May. Rounds five and six take place at this established and popular track in Hampshire that, because of the average speed that can be attained over a lap, has earned the reputation as the fastest circuit in the UK.
Once again, Matrix Motorsport will field four cars, driven by Mike Epps from Hemel Hempstead (#37), Aaron Thompson from Romford (#41), Andy Wilmot from Rochester (#21) and team principal Jeff Alden from Cheltenham (#19). Of the quartet Epps, who is currently seventh in the championship standings, leads the Matrix charge and will be all out to make sure his and the team’s title hopes are kept on track this weekend.
Of all the meetings this season this weekend's format is different from the rest, as the two preceding official Free Practice sessions do not take place immediately before the event, but were held during the week after Donington. Therefore, the first time teams take to the Thruxton asphalt will be for the 30-minute Qualifying session on Saturday afternoon.
Mike Epps - Driver
“Thruxton is a different circuit to the others and I love it: higher speeds and more thrills. We’ve made a tweak or two since Donington that seem to show promise and I think that as long as we continue to improve as we’ve been doing, we can mount a strong challenge and therefore, all of us have the chance of achieving good results.”
Aaron Thompson - Driver
“I put 100% into everything I do and this weekend at Thruxton will be no exception. To do well there, you need total commitment and I’m hoping my ‘give it all’ approach will make the difference. From my performances at Brands and Donington, I know there’s so much more to come and a good showing at Thruxton will be just what I need at this point in the season."
Andy Wilmot - Driver and Team Director
“I’m really looking forward to Thruxton. I’ve only raced there a couple of times before so I’m under no illusion that it’s going to be a challenge. We’ll have a fresh set up, so with Qualifying the first time we’ll be on track we’ll need to hit the ground running, My aim is to beat my personal best time when we were there a couple of weeks ago for the test and in doing so score my best results of the season.”
Jeff Alden - Driver and Team Principal
“As a team we’re fully aware that every circuit we go to in this, our inaugural year, represents a significant learning curve. Even so, we have already made our mark on the championship and because the competition is so close, it doesn’t take much to move up the leader board. Because of its fast format, Thruxton poses another new challenge for us, but with the work that’s gone on behind the scenes since Donington and from our experience of the first four races, we intend to push even harder this weekend.”
Dave Hayes - Team Manager and Chief Engineer
“Thruxton is one of those circuits that sorts the men from the boys. It’s fast, furious and encourages great racing. As we always do, we'll approach this weekend with 100% commitment and having made some changes to the cars, we hope to see further improvements in our qualifying performance and consequently, the race.”
This weekend’s Renault UK Clio Cup action kicks off at 14.10 on Saturday with the 30-minute Qualifying session. Both 12-lap races take place on Sunday, the first getting the green light at 10.45 and the second at 15.15, which will be broadcast live on ITV4.
