Matrix Motorsport set to build on Brands success at Donington

Press Information - 25th April 2018

Renault UK Clio Cup Rounds 3 & 4 - Team Preview

This weekend (28/29 April) sees Matrix Motorsport head to its most local track, when it takes part in rounds three and four of this year’s Renault UK Clio Cup at Donington Park. With the Burton-on-Trent operation lying an impressive third in the championship standings following the first two rounds at Brands Hatch earlier this month, the team’s aim is to see one of its four drivers on the podium in at least one of Sunday’s two races.

Leading the Matrix Motorsport charge at the season-opener was Mike Epps, who claimed an impressive sixth and fourth places in rounds one and two respectively. Next across the line was Andy Wilmot who scored a 14th & 13th, followed by Aaron Thompson with two 16th places, having had to overcome a series of frustrating issues, whilst Team Principal Jeff Alden was delighted to finish both races in 17th.

Having certainly made its presence felt at Brands Hatch and now third in what’s regarded as the most competitive single-make race series in the UK, Matrix Motorsport came away from its very first race meeting understandably proud of its achievements. Since then, tests at Thruxton (the next venue to be visited after Donington) has seen the team make a number of adjustments to the cars that it believes will have a bearing on this weekend’s performance.

DRIVER QUOTES

Mike Epps
“After scoring a sixth and fourth at Brands, I’m ready to go for even better results this weekend. There were a few things I learned from my first two Clio Cup races, so I’m going to approach things slightly differently this time.

“Donington’s a fast track. I always feel in tune with the circuit and consequently, I’ve had wins there in both single-seaters and
tin-tops. We’ve made a few changes to the cars since Brands and I think we can do well this weekend as a team, so I’m aiming to get on the podium and grab an even bigger bunch of championship points this time!”

Andy Wilmot
“Going to Donington, I feel that we’re stronger as a team and, as drivers, we all feel more confident too. I took a lot away from Brands - including a small amount of gravel - so we I definitely put into practice what we leant there.  I believe this weekend will be another stepping stone for us. Whilst Mike (Epps) has proved the pace of our cars, personally I would like to think I can get closer to the front of the grid and further up the field in the races.”

Aaron Thompson
“I’m really looking forward to Donington. I love the track because it’s so fast and flowing. I’ve had some good results there.
For some reason things didn’t click for me at Brands and I have to admit I came away from the event quite frustrated. But I’m feeling back on form again now, so I’m going to take the experience of the first two races and use it to good advantage this weekend."

Jeff Alden (Team Principal)
“While all of us in the team have been involved with motorsport for sometime, it has to be said that Brands Hatch was somewhat of a journey into the unknown for us. Bearing in mind it was our very first event, I’m proud of the fact that we represented ourselves well and we can now build on what we learned and take that forward to Donington this weekend.

“I think one of us stands an excellent chance of getting on the podium in at least one of the two races. It will be great if we can remain in a top three championship position and even improve on our third place.”

The action at Donington gets underway on Thursday (27 April), when the team takes part in two 45-minute Free Practice sessions. After a day off on Friday, the competitive element of the meeting commences at 14.05 on Saturday with 30 minutes of Qualifying followed by the two 14-lap races on Sunday at 10.00 and 15.25.
