Matrix Motorsport set for multi-car Renault UK Clio Cup entry
Aaron Thompson confirmed to drive alongside the team’s Andy Wilmot and Jeff Alden
Matrix Motorsport is pleased to announce that three drivers are now confirmed for its entry into this season’s 18-round Renault UK Clio Cup: up-and-coming 2017 Clio Cup competitor Aaron Thompson will join former British Touring Car Championship and Ginetta driver Andy Wilmot and Matrix Motorsport team principal Jeff Alden in a trio of Renault Sport Clios.
In 2015 when he was just 16 years old, Aaron Thompson became Ford Fiesta Junior Champion and last year, competed for a full season in the Renault UK Clio Cup.
“I’m really excited to be joining Matrix Motorsport. This year I want to be winning races and to have a chance of finishing in the top three in the championship. I therefore want to put myself in a car and drive with a team that will allow me to do that. After discussions with the guys at Matrix Motorsport and finding out what their plans are, I’m extremely happy to be running with them this year.”
With previous outings in the BTCC and Ginetta championships to his name, Andy Wilmot brings the benefit of his former TOCA event experience to the team. As a director of Matrix Motorsport, he is excited to be in at the start of its motorsport journey:
“As the goal is to get to the front of the Clio Cup grid this season and then look at other opportunities for the future, I’m delighted to be part of this exciting project. The testing we’ve done so far has gone really well, but it’s too early to say exactly where we stand against the rest of the field, as all of our outings have been on wet or cold tracks. I therefore can’t wait to see how things develop between now and the start of the season. Bring it on!”
Team Principal Jeff Alden said: “I’m delighted that we are in a position to announce our initial driver line up and I extend a warm welcome to Aaron who joins the Matrix family. It’s great to have such a promising young driver with us.
“We were really pleased with the amount of interest shown in our team at the Autosport show and consequently we’re in discussions with more drivers, so we anticipate making further announcements before the start of the season.”
With additional driver discussions and negotiations with key sponsors currently taking place, Matrix Motorsport looks forward to making further announcements over the next few weeks.
