Double podium at Silverstone sees Alden second in championship after season-opener

27th April 2021

The first meeting of the 2021 season saw Matrix Motorsport’s Jeff Alden score a third place in round one of this year’s new-look Maximum Networks Volkswagen Racing Cup – a result he went on to repeat later in the day in round two.

Taking place at Silverstone on 25th April, the longer-than-usual winter break meant the opening two rounds of the 14-round championship were a welcome sight to teams and drivers, who were eager to kick their season into gear and get back to regular competition.

Without the amount of testing he would have ideally liked, Jeff was determined to experience a trouble-free weekend and not get caught up in the familiar and sometimes bruising VW Cup battles that develop when the competition hots up.

The dry and sunny – albeit cold – conditions set the scene for an excellent day of motorsport and Jeff opened his account with a fourth place VW Cup grid position. Following a clean start, Jeff found himself fighting for second place with his regular rival Russel Joyce and having make a number of moves to take the position, was happy to settle for third and in doing so, record his highest place VW Cup finish in the process.

Race two saw Jeff make another good start, but this time his rival was former Focus Cup front-runner Chris Wallis. For the full 20-minute duration the two jostled for position, but this time it was Jeff who came out on top to score another third place finish behind two young hot-shots Olly Turner and Jack Depper, who’s frantic pace saw them pull away from rest of the field.

“I really enjoyed the day and it was great to be back behind the wheel after a longer than normal off-season”, reported Jeff. “Following a season of mixed fortunes last year, my plan was to stay out of trouble and get a good haul of points on the board, which is exactly what happened.

“Coming away from Silverstone having scored a double-podium, my highest finishes in the VW Cup so far and lying second in the championship is the start to the season I was looking for. I’m now determined to keep the momentum going when we get to rounds three and four at Castle Combe on 31st May”.
