Alden consolidates at Castle Combe

1st June 2021

Following his double-podium results in the first two rounds of the Maximum Networks Volkswagen Racing Cup at Silverstone in April, Jeff Alden’s fourth and third places respectively in rounds three and four at Castle Combe on 31stMay consolidated his second place in the championship standings.

A warm and sunny bank holiday weekend meant the conditions around the challenging Wilshire circuit were close to perfect. A well-judged qualifying session enabled Jeff to occupy the second row of the VW grid for the first of the day’s two races.

Making a quick getaway off the line, Jeff got amongst the top three VWs as they headed into the first corner. With the drivers ahead of him closing the door, to avoid any contact discretion is always the better part of valour around the Castle Combe circuit, the venue renowned for its unforgiving nature if anything goes wrong due to its limited run-off distances.

Whilst he closed in on his main rival Russell Joyce in the closing stages of the race, Jeff had to remain content with fourth on this occasion. However, with the top four grid positions reversed for the second outing of the day, Jeff was in pole position when the lights went out for race two.

Leading the pack for the first part of the lap, with the championship leaders eager to get to the front, they elbowed their way past the Matrix Motorsport Golf on the exit of turn one. Opting to let them get on with it and ensure another haul of championship points that would maintain his second position in the drivers’ standings, a strong performance saw Jeff take his third podium result of the season with a respectable third behind Russell Joyce and Championship leader Jack Depper.
